Why Are We Fit/Gym Shaming?

“If you don’t post it online, did you even go to the gym?” I think most people have seen these types of memes on Facebook or Instagram or whatever social media platform you use and it used to annoy me a lot until I began to understand why.

I’m a busy guy, I work full time, I have a 3 year old who seemingly never lets me sit down and a 3 month old. My girlfriend works full time and volunteers two days a week at two different ambulance services. We don’t get a lot of free time, plain and simple. But we MAKE time. I work out almost every day in some fashion. I can’t always go to the gym but I can go for a run or lift something heavy at home. I work out for a couple reasons; it makes me feel better, it helps me get to where I want to be physically, and helps me clear my mind. My girlfriend goes to a bootcamp type workout program that she really enjoys. It’s not that we have tons of free time, and it certainly isn’t because we hate sleep or have excess energy; working out is an investment in your mind and body, it literally helps you in almost every aspect of life. My passion is archery hunting and you might think that working out and bowhunt have nothing in common but you’d be wrong. You need to be in shape for that 12 mile hike to shoot an elk and then haul your 100 lb meat filled pack 12 miles back only to do it again. I usually spend an hour to two hours in the gym, almost every day. and honestly if I could, I’d spend more. In the last year we’ve really started cutting out processed foods from our diet, trying to eat a lot healthier and more natural meals.

After I started going to the gym and starting my own “brand” of hunter/athlete, I do post almost every time I go to the gym. I work my ass off and I’m proud of it. I’m not shaming those of you that don’t go, I don’t care what you do and I’m the last person to tell anyone what they need to do. I know what I need to do to get to where I want to be and working out is a big part of that.

After catching some flack from people about posting about the gym all the time, I began to understand that it does annoy some people. Some people don’t like the gym and that’s fine but I’m not going to let that stop me from doing what I love. I began to understand that some people get annoyed because they aren’t “motivated” enough to go to the gym. Newsflash people! Dedication trumps motivation every single time. I don’t always want to go to the gym, theres a lot of days when I know I’m going to be too busy after work so I have to get up at 3:30 AM to get my lift in before I get my daughters ready for daycare and I go to work. So many people want you to stop posting about going to the gym because it makes them feel bad. These people are weak and soft. There is a person at my gym that weigh easily over 350 pounds. They probably doesn’t want to be there either all the time, but they are there every single night. I know because I see them and admire their dedication.

So why are we fit shaming or gym shaming, whatever you want to call it. My opinion, it’s peoples own insecurities that they aren’t as fit as they want to be or that they aren’t as dedicated as some one who goes more than them. Does making that rude comment to them on their post make you feel better? Does it help you reach your goals? I’m willing to bet not.

I’m not the most dedicated person by any standard. I’m not a bodybuilder, I cheat on my diet, I miss a gym day once in awhile. I’m human too. But I am dedicated to myself. I have set goals that going to the gym helps me accomplish. I’ve always been into fitness, even in college when I was drinking and partying 6 days/week. I was still running 3-5 days/week.

Going to the gym and being dedicated to it is AWESOME. I don’t care if you’ve been doing it for twenty years or started yesterday. It can be intimidating. It takes guts and perserverance, but it’s worth it. Be proud of your work and effort. And for those that try to gym shame you. Who cares! If they need to take time out of their day to belittle your work, the problem lies with them anyway so keep posting. Who knows, you might inspire someone to go tomorrow.
